Lumerical is a leading developer of photonic simulation software – software which enables research and development professionals to predict how light behaves within complex structures, circuits, and systems.  Photonics unlocks many possibilities for the world’s most innovative companies who increasingly rely on virtual prototyping to explore new product concepts and optimize designs. Our customers are developing the technology of tomorrow – things like LiDAR systems for autonomous cars, virtual reality headsets, cellphone cameras, communications equipment for data centers and new platforms for quantum computing. 


As a Solutions Engineer, you will take on challenging R&D problems, work independently to meet requirements using original or existing concepts and communicate solutions concisely. You will work with Product Development and Marketing project teams to develop and extend product capabilities in new application areas, and with customers to help them achieve their goals using Lumerical’s photonic design software.  


You will focus on photonic integrated circuit applications.  Initially, you will join the team dedicated to building a compact model framework for creating and publishing photonic models, including models calibrated to specific foundry processes. You will also develop associated workflows to enable complete photonic PDKs, which may involve both Lumerical and 3rd party tools.



  • Assess feasibility and prototype solutions to confront industrially-relevant problems; 
  • With product development, implement new product capabilities by developing simulation methodologies, defining requirements and test cases, and validating solutions; 
  • Document newly developed simulation methodologies via examples, whitepapers and webinars; 
  • Assist the customer support team on challenging support cases for strategic customers; 
  • Keep abreast of the latest photonic integrated circuit developments; and 
  • Undertake occasional travel, up to 15% travel per year. 

Minimum qualifications  

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics; 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) components; 
  • Familiarity with compact model development (e.g. INTERCONNECT, Verilog-A, etc.); 
  • Experience using Lumerical’s simulation tools or other optical modeling tools;  
  • Participation in an MPW run, including design, fabrication, and testing; 
  • Programming experience with MATLAB, Python or similar language; and 
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English. 

Preferred qualifications  

  • Familiarity with EDA tools (e.g., Cadence Virtuoso and Spectre, Mentor Tanner); 
  • Experience with analog circuit design; and 
  • Proficiency in Verilog-A or similar language.
